Let's Code!

What is Python?

Python is a powerful, high-level and versatile programming language used for general purpose programming. It is an interpreted language that has gained immense popularity in recent years due to its intuitive syntax, simple learning curve and wide range of applications. Python can be used to build a variety of applications ranging from web development, machine learning and artificial intelligence, data analysis and visualization, scripting language, automation software development and more. It is an open source language that makes it easy to access for everyone. With its simple syntax, Python can be learned quickly even by new users without having any prior experience in programming.

In these videos, you will be learning the basics of Python Turtle, a version of Python that allows you to draw pictures! Not only will you be learning how to code, but afterwards, you will have your own drawing to showcase. The possibilities are truly endless, and you don't have to have any artistic abilities to give it a try. If you get lost or confused, feel free to pause or rewind. Have fun!

If you want to continue coding on your own, you can visit https://replit.com, make an account, and continue creating drawings or writing your own code. And if you want further instruction, visit https://code.org and try some of their free lessons!

Internet Safety Tips

As teenage girls, we are constantly exposed to the online world.

With the rise of social media and other forms of technology, it can be difficult to stay safe online. It’s important that girls understand the dangers of using the internet and take steps to ensure their safety while they explore cyberspace. Here are some tips on how to stay safe online:

Know what a healthy relationship is.

Online relationships are equally as important as offline relationships. Be diligent about who you're talking to, and think about how the healthy relationships you have in real life should translate online. Always have a trusted adult that you can talk to if something online makes you uncomfortable or if you have any questions.

Be mindful of what you’re posting.

While it can be tempting to post everything about your day-to-day life on social media, it’s important to remember that what you post online is out there for everyone to see — including potential predators or other malicious individuals who might want to take advantage of you. Be mindful of the information you share online and keep in mind that it could be seen by anyone.

Never give out personal info or meet someone in person who you’ve only interacted with online.

You can never be sure who is on the other side of the screen, so make sure to protect your identity by never giving out personal information or agreeing to meet up with someone you’ve only interacted with online.

Use strong passwords.

Make sure you create strong passwords and don’t use the same one for multiple sites — this way, it will be more difficult for someone to access your accounts if they get their hands on your password.

Be aware of cyberbullying.

Cyberbullying is a very real issue and it can take many forms — from direct messages to negative comments on social media posts. If someone ever tries to bully you online, make sure to report them and block them if necessary.

Stay informed about new technologies and trends.

Keeping up with the latest updates and trends in technology can help you stay safe online and ensure that your accounts are secure.
